International students of the University of Antwerp put on their cooking aprons to share meals from their home countries. Let’s have a taste of the evening!
On the 6th of November 2019 Verrekijkers magazine had the pleasure to attend the fifth edition of the international potluck dinner organized by USOS. A potluck is a communal gathering where each guest or group contributes a different and hopefully unique, and often homemade, dish of food to be shared.
When we arrive, the student restaurant Komida at campus Middelheim is transformed into a food fest. Colourful flags- and tablecloths decorate the space. The stereo plays music from every corner of the world while the students display their best culinary efforts. After the group photo is taken, we can finally start to eat.
Tonight we can taste food from Nigeria to China, from Austria to Palestina and even some national dishes. The differences in flavour, texture and smells give away the diversity represented. Kaiserschmarrn, Bacalhau à Brás, Sarmale, Witloofsoep, Tiramisu. The list can go on!
This dish reminds me of home
Food is something that can serve as an imaginary bridge to home. Nowadays all the ingredients you need can be found in international supermarkets making it easy to prepare the dishes you like most.
Besides bringing to life the taste of home, students prepared a certain dish for other reasons. To introduce dishes linked to a specific region or even village.
Normally I make this twice as spicy
Not all the dishes tasted the same as home. Many were less spicier than would normally be the case. Other dishes were prepared without meat or dairy. All to take the group into account. A potluck is not only about sharing, it’s also about caring!
